The south end of the Northern Beaches never fails to inspire. I regularly jump onto my ebike to cruise local foreshores just to remind myself how beautiful this area really is. Nothing arduous or heroic, just a fun ride to enjoy the views. This one starts at the idyllic Clontarf Reserve just around from the Spit Bridge, but you can begin anywhere in the loop.
The local back streets are especially quiet on a Sunday and easy to navigate; just stay close to the salt air. Next stop is Dobroyd Head, with views across to Balmoral and Georges Head.
A short way along the cliff-line is Tania Park in Balgowlah Heights, a popular spot for watching the Boxing Day start of the Sydney to Hobart Race as well as the NYE Sydney Harbour Fireworks.
On your way down from the Heights its worth finding Gourlay Avenue which runs through the Wellings Reserve. This will take you to one of the region’s best kept secrets: Forty Baskets Beach; pretty as a picture can be!
Leaving Baskets, head east for a look at the North Harbour Reserve with views back to Manly Cove.
Just before you reach the Aquarium, enjoy a spectacular panoramic across the Cove to North and South Heads…there’s nothing like Sydney Harbour.
Ride past the Manly Wharf, cut through The Corso, and cruise the length of Sydney’s most beautiful beachline.
This glorious tonic for the senses was only 24kms and took only an hour and 45 minutes. Sunday morning is best for traffic and tourist number reasons, but it’s a safe and scenic ride at any time you can do it. Remember to take your camera.
